Q. Why are my netid and VPN access being turned off?

I've received an email telling me I can no longer have a netID and VPN access to Yale library resources. Why the change?

Yale ITS is making changes to how it manages NetIDs, and this affects access through the Yale Virtual Private Network (VPN). These changes are necessary to protect Yale's license agreements and lower exposure to Internet attacks launched using University NetIDs.

Starting Wednesday, November 28, 2012 ITS will no longer authorize individuals with inactive Yale affiliations (including alumni and affiliates) to use the Yale VPN to access on-campus resources. It is important to note that these individuals will no longer have access to resources such as Library databases, shared servers, and other applications on Yale's network that require a VPN connection.

In addition, VPN access will be removed automatically when an individual's Yale affiliation no longer qualifies for VPN access (for example, a student becomes an alumnus).

Excluded individuals with an active M&P or faculty sponsor may request access to the VPN when an exception is deemed necessary. Please contact ITS directly with these requests.
